Recognizing publishers’ standout content in Google News Saturday, September 24, 2011 8:31 AM

Every day, news organizations and journalists around the world dedicate significant time and resources toward some of the most critical types of coverage: exceptional original reporting, deep investigative work, scoops and exclusives, and various special projects that quite clearly stand out. Today, during a Google News workshop at the Online News Association conference in Boston, we introduced a new content tag for the US edition that will help us better feature this “standout” content and give even more credit where credit is due.

If you put the tag in the HTML header of one of your articles, Google News may show the article with a ‘Featured’ label on the Google News homepage and News Search results. The syntax for this new tag is as follows:

You can use the tag to point to your own content or to point to other sources with standout stories. Because the Standout tag belongs in the HTML header of your articles, it will only be seen by automated systems like Google News, not by direct readers of your articles themselves.

Standout Content tags work best when news publishers recognize not just their own quality content, but also the original journalistic contributions of others when your stories draw from the standout efforts of other publications. Linking out to other sites is well recognized as a best practice on the web, and we believe that citing others’ standout content is important for earning trust as you also promote your own standout work.

At this point, we ask news organizations to use the Standout tag to cite their own content at most seven times in each calendar week. If a site exceeds that limit, it may find that its tags are less recognized, or ignored altogether. A news organization may cite standout stories from other news sources any number of times each week.

To be clear, Standout tags are just one signal among the many signals that algorithmically determine prominence on Google News. We recognize the importance of giving credit where credit is due, and believe this tag can be a step in the right direction -- but it will only succeed if the publisher community helps it succeed. We have experimented in the past with other metatags, and have applied feedback from those efforts to this initiative. As we monitor how the Standout tag is applied, we'll look forward to sharing further observations or updates.

Google News now crawling with Googlebot
Thursday, August 25, 2011 2:00 PM
Posted by David Smydra, Google News Product Specialist

(Cross-posted on the Webmaster Central Blog)

Google News recently updated our infrastructure to crawl with Google’s primary user-agent, Googlebot. What does this mean? Very little to most publishers. Any news organizations that wish to opt out of Google News can continue to do so: Google News will still respect the robots.txt entry for Googlebot-News, our former user-agent, if it is more restrictive than the robots.txt entry for Googlebot.

Our Help Center provides detailed guidance on using the robots exclusion protocol for Google News, and publishers can contact the Google News Support Team if they have any questions, but we wanted to first clarify the following:

* Although you’ll now only see the Googlebot user-agent in your site’s logs, no need to worry: the appearance of Googlebot instead of Googlebot-News is independent of our inclusion policies. (You can always check whether your site is included in Google News by searching with the “site:” operator. For instance, enter “site:yournewssite.com” in the search field for Google News, and if you see results then we are currently indexing your news site.)
* Your analytics tool will still be able to differentiate user traffic coming to your website from Google Search and traffic coming from Google News, so you should see no changes there. The main difference is that you will no longer see occasional automated visits to your site from the Googlebot-news crawler.
* If you’re currently respecting webmaster guidelines for Googlebot, you will not need to make any code changes to your site. Sites that have implemented subscriptions using a metered model or who have implemented First Click Free will not experience any changes. For sites which require registration, payment or login prior to reading any full article, Google News will only be able to crawl and index the title and snippet that you show all users who visit your page. Our Webmaster Guidelines provide additional information about “cloaking” (i.e., showing a bot a different version than what users experience). Learn more about Google News and subscription publishers in this Help Center article.
* Rest assured, your Sitemap will still be crawled. This change does not affect how we crawl News Sitemaps. If you are a News publisher who hasn’t yet set up a News Sitemap and are interested in getting started, please follow this link.
* For any publishers that wish to opt out of Google News and stay in Google Search, you can simply disallow Googlebot-news and allow Googlebot. For more information on how to do this, consult our Help Center.

As with any website, from time to time we need to make updates to our infrastructure. At the same time, we want to continue to provide as much control as possible to news web sites. We hope we have answered any questions you might have about this update. If you have additional questions, please check out our Help Center.

Enhancements to Google News for Android tablets and iPads
Tuesday, August 9, 2011 10:00 PM
Posted by Arun Prasath, Tech Lead, Mobile Google News

Alongside working on improving the Google News design for smartphones, we have also been looking into enhancing our offering for tablet devices. Today, we are launching a few minor enhancements to Google News for Android tablets and iPads.

We have optimized columns in the home page and section pages so that they can be more easily viewed in portrait and landscape orientations. Some of the other updates include: a conveniently placed menu on the top for navigating across sections, support of finger swiping through the multimedia strip in expanded story boxes and a more friendly edition picker.

Women of Zimbabwe Arise Activists Arrested on International Day of Peace

On Wednesday, September 21, activists from Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) marched in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to commemorate International Day of Peace. Not seeming to appreciate the irony, police officers violently dispersed the protest, arresting 12 women and injuring several others.

Thursday, 10 of those women were released, but Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlongu remain in jail. They are charged with kidnapping and theft pertaining to some sort of bizarre set of circumstances that is beyond my comprehension at this time.

Jenni and Magodonga appeared in court this morning. Bail was denied and their next hearing is scheduled for October 6th. They will remain imprisoned until that time. Jenni recently had a minor operation which could result in serious complications from infection due to the disgusting sanitary conditions in prison. This ridiculous set of circumstances is a direct reflection of elements of the Zimbabwe government attempting to repress political and social dissent.

Women of Zimbabwe Arise, a social justice movement of women and men dedicated to improving human rights, increasing the quality of life and holding the government accountable in Zimbabwe, are no strangers to arrests and harassment by the government. WOZA activists number their arrests in the hundreds. Earlier this year, Jenni and Magodonga were warned the next time they were arrested, they would be kept in a men’s prison.

It’s time the government of Zimbabwe stopped violating the peace on any day of the year. Zimbabwe will appear before the United Nations Human Rights Council in early October to defend its human rights record. We are calling on regional neighbor Angola, a country with influence in the region, to speak up and insist Zimbabwe meet its human rights obligations. Women should be allowed to gather to celebrate peace without worrying about being met with violence.

Tell Angola to speak up for peace.

Reach binding climate deal: Hasina

Dhaka, Sep 24 (bdnews24.com)—Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the world once again to reach a binding agreement on climate change.

"Climate change is upon us and we cannot afford to waste time," Hasina told the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday in New York.

"In COP 17 in Durban this year, we must have a binding agreement on cuts of greenhouse gas emissions, burden sharing, relocation of climate migrants, free transfer of technologies, and real contribution to the internationally agreed Climate Fund," she said.

The 17th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 17) will be held in Durban in South Africa.

"Bangladesh is under extra strain from climate change. A meter rise of the sea due to global warming would inundate a fifth of our landmass displacing over 30 million people," Hasina said, and pointed out that this would be the largest humanitarian crisis in history.

She then outlined the measures Bangladesh had undertaken to mitigate climate change impacts.

"We have prepared a 134-point adaptation and mitigation plan that includes river dredging, afforesting 20 percent of land and increasing food production with crop varieties attuned to climate change.

"We have also established a Climate Change Trust Fund with $ 300 million of our own funds, and a Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund with $ 110 million from the donors," she added.

FARS NEWS AGANCY, in a news report, has quoted MP Ali Motahhari as threatening to resign if the motion to ask question from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scrapped. However, Deputy Majlis Speaker Mohammad Reza Bahonar had said previously the motion has been cancelled because the numbers of signatures are less than what is needed. Motahhari says only 14 MPs have withdrawn their signatures and still 86 MPs are insistent on asking question from the president. The MP added certain lawmakers dropped the motion under pressure from the Majlis Presiding Board. Motahhari was the initiator of the motion to summon Ahmadinejad to the parliament to answer lawmakers’ questions about a number of the irregularities. (According to the Constitution, the president must appear in the parliament to answer questions when at least one fourth of the lawmakers ask the president to provide an explanation for his decisions and measures regarding a certain issue.)

JAME JAM, in a news report, has quoted head of the Organization for Crisis Management Hasan Qadami as saying that drought has affected 75 percent of the country’s lands. Qadami said in previous years, country’s natural disasters were limited to earthquakes and floods but currently drought and forest fire have been added to them, he said. Qadami said declining rainfall as the main reason for drought in Iran.

HAMSHAHRI, in a news report, has said while Tehran Governor General Morteza Tamadon claims that the air quality in Tehran is in a good condition MP Nasrollah Torabi Qahfarkhi has expressed concern over air pollution in Tehran. However, the director of the Tehran Air Quality Control Company has said Tehran has not experienced even one day of clean air in the first six month of the current year.

Indian PM to visit Iran

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has accepted, in principle, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s renewed invitation to visit Iran.

The invitation was accepted when the two leaders met in New York after a long time on Friday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai told reporters.

The dates for the visit will be decided by the two sides after diplomatic consultations, he said. But as part of the bilateral agenda of visits, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar ill be visiting Iran shortly. If Manmohan Singh visits Iran, it will be the first prime ministerial visit after 10 years, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee made a trip to Tehran in 2001. But there have been visits at other levels over the years between the two countries.

“The previously planned meeting basically focused on our bilateral relationship,” Mathai said when asked if the meeting with Ahmadinejad, coupled with Indian support for Palestine, would have an impact on New Delhi’s ties with Washington.

Though the two leaders did not discuss the proposed IranPakistan-India gas pipeline - another issue of divergence with the US - “they discussed a whole series of projects between the two countries, including potential cooperation in the field of hydrocarbons”, he said.

They also decided to hold a meeting of the India-Iran Joint Economic Commission co-chaired by the foreign ministers of the two countries. The two leaders reviewed the situation in Afghanistan and discussed developments in West Asia and North Africa. They also agreed to review the Non Aligned Movement, which will be chaired next by Tehran.

FM Lieberman: UN Speech Abbas' Most Anti-Israel Ever

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman called Abbas' UN speech his most inciting ever against Israel

The speech made by Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas “was the worst example of anti-Israel incitement and vitriol I have ever heard,” Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said over the weekend. Abbas, who throughout the speech called Israel a “colonial occupying power,” accused Israel of targeting civilians and arbitrarily destroying crops, schools, mosques and hospitals. He demanded that the United Nations recognize Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem as an Arab state, without further negotiations with Israel.

The language that used by Abbas, who spoke in Arabic to the cheers of UN General Assembly delegates, was especially troubling, said Lieberman. “It was an appeal to the darkest forces,” Lieberman said. “He talked about how Israel was destroying Islamic holy places, how the IDF is responsible for the 'price tag' actions, the IDF sending attack dogs against Palestinians. He talked about the 'ethos' of Arafat and how terrorists are really 'political prisoners.' Apparently he forgot about the murders of the Fogel family of Itamar,” said Lieberman, who walked out when Abbas began speaking.

Speaking to Channel 10, Lieberman was asked whether there was a chance that talks could start up with the Palestinians soon. The Foreign Minister was skeptical. “Apparently they have made a strategic decision not to speak to us. Since the establishment of the current government, we have been asking the Palestinians to speak to us. We even made the difficult decision to freeze building in Judea and Samaria for ten months, but after a speech like Abbas' it's clear they probably have no intention to return to negotiations.”

The accessibility of envy on social media by Fahad Faruqui

We have all found ourselves to some degree comparing and judging our life experiences, appearances, relationships, and professional and academic successes to those attained by others. There are two logical errors that lead to envy and covetousness which poison the soul:

a) you can never know the totality of a person’s life and

b) my happiness is not conditional upon your successes or failures.

Recently, a friend and I flew to Madrid from Cairo, exploring Seville, Cordoba, Granada, and Ronda, savouring the joys of Moorish architecture, Andalusian food and flamenco shows in the most authentic tablaos. We then moved to Tangier, Morocco, via the port of Tarifa, after a delightful afternoon spent gazing at the beautiful views of the Strait of Gibraltar from atop one of the “Pillars of Hercules” that once bore the warning for sailors “nothing further beyond” in Latin.

Our travels continued as we treasured the Atlas Mountains, picturesque blue-washed villages, narrow alleys of Morocco, where we seized every opportunity to take delight in eating the Moroccan food. A month later, at the train station of Casablanca, my friend and I parted ways with tons of pictures and beautiful memories, some of which were shared on social media.

Some amongst my friends and acquaintances blatantly said they were envious of my (so to speak) trouble-free life. Those who could afford such a trip didn’t have the time to spare; others didn’t have the means to go; while some others couldn’t go because their kids are too young to track the narrow alleys of Fez’s Old Medina which become even tighter when donkeys laden with supplies walk by.

I reminded an acquaintance that he has the comfort of family, job security, and most importantly, daughters that he adores, so there is no need to marvel at a younger single man who invested most of his earnings this year in a pedantically planned, epic trip.

With the advancement of technology, the models on the cover-pages of magazines, who are de facto role models for teenagers and adults across the globe, are ever more perfect than the idealised beauty depicted in the Florentine Renaissance paintings and sculptures. The tweaked waistlines and thighs, exaggerated bosoms and skin devoid of blemishes, pigmentation, and scars, all acquired through Photoshop are all too unreal, but have given a new point of comparison that is hard, if not impossible, to top. If you’re healthy and fit, another person’s “beauty,” whether natural or technology-enhanced, should not deter you from being happy. But I can understand the need to be accepted and loved.

Being consumed in constant judging leaves us with the feeling of being mediocre or, alternately, with narcissistic pride. Both antithetical perceptions absorb us in the vicious cycle of comparison with friends, family and unknown others. What’s most important — which I wish had realised in my teens — is to learn to be comfortable in our own skin.

Comparing how you look, the model of your cell phone and car, clothes and handbags, and summer travel plans with others develops a rat race mentality. Our lives are then consumed in trivial competitions: how much you can bench press, how fast you can drive in traffic or perform various car/bike stunts, how up-to-date with fashion you are, and so on.

That is, perhaps, why I see young boys and girls going out of their way to categorise classmates based on their perceptions of haves and have-nots and go on forming superficial friendships.

Even the very devout are not free from the curse of comparison. How long a person stays in prostration during a prayer is just another example. Those who know the pitfalls of judging and comparing stay mindful of their thoughts and intentions. As Lee Weissman noted in less than 141 characters on Twitter: “In my brain: ‘Wow, he is so knowledgeable’ ‘That guy can really pray.’ Enough! Comparing yourself to other people is such a dead end.”

In many ways, social media has given access to envy and increased our tendency to judge and compare our lives with others by giving us a constant feed of the new relationship statuses, jobs, children, travels and successes that our friends and acquaintances are encountering.

The very fact that someone has married before you, had more children, gotten promoted, toned their body or travelled to exotic getaways may appear immensely important to us now, but such perceptions are short-sighted and shouldn’t drive us into the pit of envy.

Facebook offers relationship statuses raging from “It’s complicated” to “In a relationship” to “Divorced” among many others. In either of the relationships, you can be miserable judging and comparing yourself with others, or you can be in a state of utter bliss if you’re in harmony with yourself.

I, like many others, don’t post my worries, illnesses, loss of love and troubles on social media. If I were to give you an honest blow by blow account of my life, you may not want to be in my shoes. If you have to, mimic those with strong leadership qualities, compare yourself to those who epitomise the best of manners, follow the footsteps of those wise men and women who posses a strong sense of ethics, morals and fight for human rights and justice.

In crux, heed the wisdom of an age-old proverb, “be careful what you wish for; your wish may come true” and find happiness in what you have.

Legalize and Regulate Marijuana in a Manner Similar to Alcohol.

We the people want to know when we can have our "perfectly legitimate" discussion on marijuana legalization. Marijuana prohibition has resulted in the arrest of over 20 million Americans since 1965, countless lives ruined and hundreds of billions of tax dollars squandered and yet this policy has still failed to achieve its stated goals of lowering use rates, limiting the drug's access, and creating safer communities.

Isn't it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?

A Formal Funeral for the Two-State Solution | Foreign Affairs

A Formal Funeral for the Two-State Solution | Foreign Affairs

INVITATION FROM BARISAL WEB AT NATIONAL PRESS CLUB

Drug war

Drug war spending continues to rise as the government continues implementing the failed policies of the war on drugs. Now is our chance to demand that Congress stop wasting money on this catastrophe!

Recently, Congress was charged with cutting at least $1.5 trillion in government spending. That's why you need to write your representative today and show your support for cutting drug war funding.

Every year, the government spends at least $50 billion on the war on drugs with little to show for it. Drug war programs have filled prisons, diverted law enforcement from focusing on serious crimes, and violated civil and human rights here and abroad. The vast majority of Americans derive no benefit from these wasteful programs but they are sustained by powerful vested interests that profit off the drug war boondoggle.

Tell Congress that we've reached the drug war debt-ceiling and to eliminate expensive, ineffective, unaccountable drug war programs.

Let's start by calling for funding cuts to the DEA. Nixon started the DEA right after he declared the war on drugs, and it represents all that’s wrong with the drug war. It’s a law enforcement approach to a public health problem - and it costs taxpayers over $2 billion each year. The DEA should not be in the business of determining which drugs are medicines and blocking scientific research.

In this era of debt, deficits and budget cuts, let’s demand: no more spending on counterproductive drug war programs like the DEA. No more wasting money putting nonviolent drug users behind bars. No more spending on drug policies that don't work and put the public in harm's way. Tell Congress: No more drug war spending.

Thank you for your support.

BBC to journalists on social media: "Don't do anything stupid"

Nicole Martinelli
image:

Recognizing that social media can be a land mine for journalists, the BBC has updated its social media policy.

While the BBC doesn't mind that journalists have personal accounts, they outline in six points how to tweet, blog and use Facebook without running into trouble. (Journalists frequently do -- check out IJNet's guide to 5 tweets that get journalists fired).

They begin the guide to personal accounts by stating "...as a BBC member of staff - and especially as someone who works in News - there are particular considerations to bear in mind. They can all be summarised as: 'Don't do anything stupid’".

Namely, BBC journalists can mention where they work, but they should not use BBC in personal account names. Stay away from politics and anything that might be seen as partisan and speak to management if they want to blog about issues that might be perceived as a conflict of interest.

The four-page document, updated July 12, runs about 900 words. (You can download the .PDF here).

In addition to spelling out what news staff should keep in mind while tweeting or blogging for their personal accounts, it also tells them how to treat breaking news situations and while working on the official news program accounts.

The clarification comes at a time when news organizations are trying to figure out the best way to harness social media while avoiding news leaks and controversy.

The Associated Press, which encourages its journalists to merge personal and professional social media accounts, recently issued a warning to two journalists who expressed personal opinions on social networks.

Time Asia editor: It's OK to spin the news

James Breiner
image:

Time magazine has transformed itself to compete in the world of digital journalism. It publishes multiple editions on multiple platforms, and the most important one is no longer the print edition.

In addition, “You never hear the word objectivity in the newsroom at Time,” says Zoher Abdoolcarim, Asia editor for the publication. “We talk about fairness and balance, yes.”

With so much news available online instantaneously, Time could no longer continue as just a weekly digest of news. It had to tell people what the news means, Abdoolcarim told an audience recently at Tsinghua University's School of Journalism and Communication in Beijing.

“We analyze, we explain and we spin. Yes, spin,” said Abdoolcarim. “It’s OK to spin as long as you’re truthful, informed, transparent and add to the body of knowledge.”

A multiplatform news publisher

The online publication, Time.com, has displaced the magazine as the company's growth platform, he said. There are more people working for the online version than the magazine, and the audience is larger. The online version produces the vast majority of its own stories, with an emphasis on breaking news.

Time's audience on mobile platforms such as tablets and smartphones totals 3.7 million. And while Abdoolcarim himself does not have accounts with social networks, Time has 2.8 million followers and 347,000 Facebook fans.

To prevent the free online version from cannibalizing the magazine audience, non-subscribers cannot access the full print edition, just the headline and a teaser. (This Paid Content post describes Time.com's strategy of exploiting its verticals.)

Print journalism can survive if it continues to evolve, Abdoolcarim said in answer to a student's question about the future of the magazine. However, he advised students to educate themselves in the new multimedia journalism, not just print.

Wealth and the Web

Time has a surprising demographic in the U.S.: magazine subscribers are older but earn less than the users of Time.com. In Asia, the income situation is the reverse: the older magazine readers are wealthier.

One student asked Abdoolcarim if he feared that Time's use of a point of view and spin would diminish its credibility and make it just another opinion machine.

“All good journalism should be rooted in reporting,” he replied. “We do informed commentary. You have to get out there. I'm not in favor of armchair journalism or pure blanket commentary.”

Abdoolcarim is based in his native Hong Kong but talks regularly with the editors in New York. He told several stories about how he urged different covers or story treatments for the Asian edition of Time.

A recent cover featured a close-up portrait and the headline “The Rise of Rick Perry.” Asian readers would have no idea who the cover subject was, Abdoolcarim told his colleagues in New York. So the Asian edition had some text below the headline: “Can the governor of Texas become the next U.S. president?”

Stephen Colbert Discusses the NASA Satellite That May or May Not Fall on You Sometime Today

Have you heard about this whole falling satellite thing? NASA tells us that a satellite is going to fall from space... somewhere... sometime today or tomorrow-ish. But don't worry about having time to get out of danger! As Stephen Colbert points out, "In addition to providing a 28-hour impact window across a 118 million-square-mile danger zone, NASA is providing a 20-minute warning before the satellite strikes." So we're golden!

Getting bless and Thanks after Cross Firing:

Pressuring to take statement from:সংগ্রাম সম্পাদক ও জামায়াত নেতাদের চাপপ্রয়োগে স্বীকারোক্তি আদায়ের চেষ্টা

Strike in Bangladesh for reduce rates of Fuel, Gas, and Essential items for the Peoples...

17 GM And China’s SAIC Motor Corp Partner On Electric Vehicles

SAIC Motor Corp., Ltd. Chairman Hu Maoyuan and General Motors Co. Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson signed an agreement this week to jointly develop a new electric vehicle architecture in China. The components and vehicle structures will be built in Shanghai, at the companies’ joint venture, The Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC). The cars will be sold in China under the Shanghai GM and SAIC brand names.

In addition, the architecture will also be used by both companies to build electric vehicles around the world.

This is the first electric vehicle architecture to be co-developed by GM and SAIC, although the companies are involved in 10 other joint projects in China, with a focus on vehicle and powertrain manufacturing, sales and aftersales, automotive engineering and design, automotive finance and telematics and the sale of used vehicles. They also jointly developed the Sail electric concept car last year, which was designed at PATAC.

Under the new partnership, GM will contribute its knowledge of electric car design and engineering combined with SAIC’s knowledge of the local market in China.

The impact of the new deal will be felt further than China, however, as the terms of the deal allow the companies’ to use the jointly developed technology for their own purposes. By teaming up, they’re able to get more electric cars into the market, and faster than if they went on their own. That means more electric cars will be coming at a critical time when government regulators are pushing for tougher emission and fuel consumption guidelines, both in China and elsewhere.

No additional details or timing of product launches are available at this time.

Raising Rural Incomes While Revitalising Local Culture

The vast majority of AKF beneficiaries are small producers whose livelihoods depend on income from selling their crops or the products they make. Their incomes are strongly affected by factors such as the level of technical knowledge, physical distance to markets, uneven competition due to national and international trade policies, devastation of war and limits on productivity caused by environmental degradation.
