40,000 People Call on U.S. Mayors to End Journalist Arrests

The number of journalists arrested at Occupy Wall Street events around the country just keeps climbing. After this week’s police raids on Occupy LA and Occupy Philly, the total number of journalists arrested is now up to 30. The arrests have spread across 10 cities from Oakland to Boston, Los Angeles to Atlanta. While the arrests are perhaps the worst examples of press suppression, other reports of police roughing up journalists or blocking them from reporting continue to roll in. Even in New York City, where the NYPD has ordered its officers not to interfere with press, journalists are still being harassed. A chorus of leading news organizations, press associations and civil liberties groups has spoken out against the press suppression and arrests that have plagued Occupy protests around the country. Today tens of thousands of people join that call. Today we delivered a petition with more than 40,000 signatures to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, president of the United States Conference of Mayors, urging mayors around the country to defend the First Amendment and protect journalists covering the Occupy movement. It’s time for mayors to rein in these attacks and publicly commit to defending the First Amendment in their cities. Now, more than ever, we need a robust public square for debate and discussion. Freedom of the press can’t be practiced from a jail cell. Below is a copy of the petition: Free Press Petition to U.S. Conference of Mayors Free Press is a national, nonpartisan organization working to reform the media. Free Press does not support or oppose any candidate for public office. Through education, organizing and advocacy, we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media and universal access to communications.

Assange military rule on cable would have leaked

The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange , had not directly spoken to Bradley Manning , American soldier who would have leaked U.S. diplomatic cables, but the situation warrants. "The treatment administration (Barack) Obama to Bradley Manning has been inhuman and degrading treatment" , said the Australian in a statement. He also said that if it were true that Manning gave papers in Iraq, Afghanistan and papers papers of the Department of State, his gesture changed the lives of thousands of people. "The material has helped put an end to dictatorships in the Middle East , has revealed the torture and evil in all corners of the world, "he said. The military 24 years in prison for a year and a half. However, it does not have a conviction. Last Friday began the first hearing to determine whether it will be tried by a military tribunal or ordinary. If found guilty Manning , this would happen many years in jail and could even be sentenced to death. APPEALS COURT WILL RECEIVE ASSANGE On the other hand, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom , the highest court in the land, granted permission to appeal his extradition journalist in Sweden for alleged sexual offenses. "The court has decided that seven judges hear the appeal because of the great public importance of the issue raised," said a statement.

CIA agent arrested in Iran

Iran has arrested a spy who had links with the CIA, the public relations department of the Intelligence Ministry said in a statement released on Saturday. “The U.S. government, in line with hostile and comprehensive intelligence and operational measures against the Islamic Republic of Iran and the honored people of our country, had made a hefty investment and devised a complex and large-scale scheme to create the possibility to infiltrate into the intelligence apparatus of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement read. “Along these lines, the U.S. intelligence agency CIA had tasked one of its intelligence analysts, who had experiences such as working at intelligence centers of the United States Army and had visited the country’s military base(s) in Afghanistan and Iraq, with playing out the complex intelligence-operational scenario,” it added. The statement also said, “In the scenario, the spy in question had to position himself in intelligence corridors leading to the Intelligence Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran in order to introduce fraudulent information to the ministry on a massive scale and conduct espionage in the next stage.” “The Iranian-born CIA officer started his mission and collected data through a series of purposeful and planned activities after receiving complicated intelligence training in several phases and entering the region. However, through the vigilance of (intelligence agents), he was identified upon arriving at Bagram base in Afghanistan, and his (intention to conduct) espionage and the mission given to him were brought to light,” it added. “The spy in question was kept under surveillance by intelligence personnel of the Islamic Republic of Iran and was under surveillance after entering our country’s soil and was arrested… when he started his spying mission,” the statement read. “The CIA’s espionage plan was revealed and scuttled in this way, and once again, the enemies’ evil intentions were foiled through the intelligence supremacy and power of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” it said. The Intelligence Ministry also said in the statement that more details of the case will be released in the next few days.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM FROM MUKTIDOOTH ON BEHALF OF ANERA, GAZA

Dear , Every donation we receivebetween now and December 31 will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $200,000. A five-year-old boy and his three-year-old sister both drowned in an open sewage basin in Khan Younis refugee camp here in Gaza last week. I am an engineer working for ANERA in Gaza and I know this tragedy could have been prevented. ANERA has helped communities in Khan Younis before, but unsafe sewage basins and sewage leaking onto the streets are a constant threat to the health and safety of families living there. Imagine a street with raw sewage leaking onto it. Beyond creating horrible smells, these leaks are a major health threat to the children who want to run and play freely throughout the neighborhood. Now imagine a clean street where children can play and parents have peace of mind that their children are safe. It is because of support from people like you that ANERA has been able to fix sewage systems and clean streets in several communities already, but the tragic deaths of two children last week make it clear that much more has to be done. As I learned from my mother, giving is the best gift we possess. I especially feel this way when my work gives a family in Gaza a safer neighborhood and helps them live with a little more dignity. What you give, makes my work possible. Please, be as generous as possible with your end-of-year gift. Sincerely, Abeer Akeel Engineer ANERA, Gaza
