Yemen adopts exceptional measures on shipments after parcel bombs

SANAA, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Yemen is to adopt exceptional security measures on cargo shipments leaving Yemeni airports after two parcel bombs originated from the country were found on cargo planes bound for the United States, official news agency Saba reported late Sunday.

"Yemen's national committee for civil aviation security has approved exceptional security measures on inspecting all cargo shipments leaving Yemeni airports to ensure the safety of civil aviation," Saba quoted the committee's statement as reporting.

The committee also stressed the importance of exchanging intelligence information between the security authorities in all countries to combat terrorism, according to Saba.

The failed terror plot, in which two suspicious packages were found Thursday night on cargo planes from Yemen to the United States, has spurred security scare across the Atlantic.

With intelligence help by the United States, Yemen has beefed up security campaign including air raids on al-Qaida wing since the terrorist group claimed credit for a failed attempt to blow up a U.S. passenger plane in December 2009.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday vowed continued support for the work of the United Nations and its chief, and pledged unswerving efforts to promote the building of a peaceful and harmonious world.

Hu made the pledge in his meeting with visiting United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who was in China to attend the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo.

Extending a warm welcome to Ban, Hu said China appreciated Ban's efforts in promoting world peace and development since he became the UN's chief.

"China has always advocated, supported and practiced multilateralism, firmly safeguarded the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and safeguarded the authority and role of the United Nations," he said.

Hu put forward proposals for the United Nations to better fulfill its mission -- taking into account the complicated global situation. He said the UN needed to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, actively practice multilateralism, and push forward democratization of international relations.

The Chinese president also suggested the UN speed up measures to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and strengthen its roles in international affairs.

China will, as always, support the work of the UN and its chief and make unremitting efforts to promote the building of a harmonious world with lasting peace and common prosperity, He said.

Ban said the United Nations has played an increasingly important role in global affairs, and he expected closer cooperation between the UN and China and the country's positive participation in international affairs.

Ban applauded the success of the Shanghai World Expo.

He said China has played a leading role in such affairs as realizing the MDG, protecting the rights of women and children, promoting sustainable development and peacekeeping. China has made a great contribution to countering the global financial crisis, Ban said.

Invited by the Chinese government, Ban arrived in Shanghai on Saturday to start his China visit. Before heading for Beijing, he attended the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo and delivered a speech at the Summit Forum there.

Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo also met with Ban later on Monday. Ban will meet with top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Tuesday.
