OPEN DEMOCRACY
We've just launched our summer fundraising campaign and I’m using this email bulletin to ask you to become one of openDemocracy’s supporters. If you've just made a donation, please accept my wholehearted thanks. If not, please read on.
By making a donation you will be supporting the mission openDemocracy readers share of promoting the better understanding and practice of democracy and working for a fairer, more humane world.

From 9/11 to Tahrir Square and beyond…
openDemocracy was born ten years ago in answer to a question: How do you achieve real democracy at the end of the twentieth century, given the power of corporations, global media, the impact of inequality? In response, openDemocracy used the web to grow a world conversation - accessible to all - on the principles of deliberation, openness, communication and respect.
Today, people round the world face an even more unpredictable decade. Hope for open forms of democracy are greater but the dangers of autocratic power have increased.
openDemocracy is a free, open space for
- sharp and timely insights into events all over the world. We were born in the shocked response to 9/11. Now the old foundations are shaking in Tunisia, Egypt, Spain, Libya, and Greece…
- exploring how we make rulers more accountable - challenging thinking on how we are governed, and crucially - how we might govern ourselves…
- serious, engaged and creative dissent - while many of us grew up with the highly centralised power of the twentieth century, we sensed the dissolving force of the internet as a means for breaking down national silos and sharing good ideas
- growing unique conversations in our specialist sections. We began searching for new approaches to conflict and to a more democratic and humane definition of security, with the inspiring analysis of our two columnists, Paul Rogers and Mary Kaldor.
A million readers this year
Since its launch ten years ago, openDemocracy has published more than 12,000 articles from more than 3,500 writers, adding between 5-10 high quality pieces a day. Millions of readers have visited the site over the last decade – and almost 200,000 people read something on openDemocracy every month. And all accessible for no charge to readers.
In the six months since we last invited readers to support us, more than a million people have visited the site from more than 220 countries and territories. Help us to spread our influence.
