Arrest of Sagor-Runi killers demanded

President Zillur Rahman on Monday called upon the journalists to prioritise the national interests while presenting news and opinions, reports UNB.
"I hope that respected journalists will relentlessly contribute to nation-building activities with their intellects, conscience and writings," he said.
The President made the remarks when a 51-member delegation of Bangladesh Federal Journalists Union (BFJU), led by its president Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, met him at Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, the BFJU delegation apprised the President about their activities and sought his cooperation in further strengthening the welfare fund of journalists.
They also demanded the arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of journalist couple Sagar-Runi and that of other slain journalists.
Welcoming the journalist delegation, President Zillur Rahman said journalism is a profession that upholds people's hopes and aspirations, establishes a bridge between the government and the common people, and shows the nation the path of possible solution during any crisis.
"In my consideration, journalism is not only a profession but also a tool to take the nation forward," he said.
Describing the media's role as very important in development of democracy, Zillur said newspapers help identify the lapses of the government through presenting people's opinions and making constructive criticisms.
"Thus both the government and people get benefited and democracy flourishes," he said.
President Zillur emphasised making the country's democratic advancement more vibrant and meaningful for the welfare of the nation. "Only a democratic system can ensure people's full independence and freedom of their expression."
Secretaries to the President's Office were present on the occasion.
